The Council

Greater Bendigo City Council is one of 79 local government councils in the state of Victoria, Australia.

The municipality was created in April 1994 following the State Government's reform of local government. The municipality has a population of more than 100,000 people (view Council ward maps).

The Council comprises nine people elected from the community every four years to represent the interests of all residents and ratepayers in the governing of the municipality.

Councillors are not paid a salary but receive an allowance. They act in a voluntary capacity and are involved in many council committees and community activities.

To help Victorians understand more about local councils and their role, Local Government Victoria has a range of information.

It provides information about how councils work, how they make decisions, what their key functions are, how they are funded and much more.

Council is a member of the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV).

The Municipal Association of Victoria was established to promote the efficient carrying out of municipal government throughout the State of Victoria and to watch over and protect the interests, rights and privileges of councils.
