Waste and Recycling

Did you know?

Every year Victorians throw out enough food waste to fill the MCG three times!

Waste reduction starts at home.

We all pay for our waste disposal services via rates, landfill levies and various charges on goods and services.

Everyone has a stake in reducing waste and as a result, reducing our impact on the natural environment.

The preferred option is to not have any waste at all.

Use the waste hierarchy next time you go shopping, clean out the cupboards or throw something in the bin.

The Waste Hierarchy

Avoidance

Shop smart

Do I need it?

How long will it last for?

Is it a quality product?

Reduce

Buy less waste.

Avoid disposable items.

Choose products with little packaging.

Say 'no' to plastic bags.

Buy in bulk when possible.

Reuse

Look for opportunities to use items again.

Reuse glass and plastic containers.

Donate old clothes, books and toys to charities.

Recycle

Recycle correctly at home

Paper, glass, plastic, metal cans and tins can all be placed in your yellow lid bin. These materials are a reusable resource.

Disposal

Landfill - the final option

If the item is not suitable for any of the above options, it can be disposed of at a landfill centre.
