Water

Our water system provides a wide range of services for all Victorians.

It delivers economic value by allocating water to towns, irrigation, agriculture and industry, while healthy rivers and aquifers provide environmental, cultural and recreational value.

The State Government manages the allocation of water resources across Victoria. In doing this it strives to strike the right balance between its economic, environmental and social values

Bendigo Sustainable Water Use Plan

The City of Greater Bendigo adopted a Bendigo Sustainable Water Use Plan (SWUP) to reduce consumption and better manage our use of water.

We use a significant amount of water through the management of local parks, sporting fields, public gardens, swimming pools and in public facilities and buildings.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment provided funding to assist with the development of the water use plan.

The SWUP was developed with input from Coliban Water and key staff members by analysing the City's water consumption during a six year period.

Grey water reuse

We have experienced extended dry periods placing pressure on water resources.

Many people are looking at alternative water sources such as the reuse of household grey water.  The use of grey water during times of drought is a viable option provided public health and environmental health risks are minimised.

To assist residents, we have produced information brochures and fact sheets explaining appropriate grey water reuse to ensure public health and environmental health risks is minimised.

Smart Gardens Program

The Smart Gardens Program began in 1999 as a joint initiative of the City of Greater Bendigo, Coliban Water and Department of Primary Industries (until 2009). The program's key focus is encouraging water wise and sustainable gardening practices through education.

Smart Gardens for a Dry Climate website is a key resource for the program.

A free handy Smart Gardens for a Dry Climate booklet is also available from City of Greater Bendigo Customer Service Centres.
