A vision for the Bendigo Library

Works to begin on Library project

Works on the Bendigo Library redevelopment are on track to begin before the end of the year with a planning permit granted, a project manager appointed and calls for expressions of interest to build the project.

Planning approval was granted in March and construction contracts are due to be awarded in early September with building works expected to get underway in September/October.

Mayor Alec Sandner says the project is another example of how the City of Greater Bendigo is planning and delivering infrastructure and services for the future.

“This project is progressing as planned and is reaching a very exciting stage and while there may be some inconvenience to library users while the work is occurring the end result is expected to more than compensate for this,” Cr Sandner says.

Redevelopment works are due to be completed in early 2014.

Library services will continue in the CBD

The City of Greater Bendigo and the Goldfields Library Corporation are working to ensure the redevelopment works have a minimal impact on library customers.

While the redevelopment work is being undertaken, library services will operate from the former Bendigo Advertiser building (86-88 Pall Mall) and Tea Rose Bakery site (202 Hargreaves Street).

It is likely that library services will be unavailable in the CBD for about three weeks in order for staff and facilities to be relocated to the temporary site.

Goldfileds Library Corporation CEO Carolyn Macvean says that while the temporary site is smaller than the existing site, most services will be available, but at a reduced level.

“We thank users in advance for their patience and remind them that all other Goldfields libraries are available to all Bendigo members and will continue to operate as usual throughout the construction phase. The nearest libraries are located at Kangaroo Flat, Eaglehawk and Castlemaine.”

Previous news on the Library redevelopment

Council has announced its vision to redevelop the Bendigo Library so it meets the current and future needs of the community.

This major refurbishment of the entire library complex will create a new community facility incorporating a vibrant library precinct. With more than 475,000 visitors annually and almost 40,000 members, the library building is currently underperforming and will not be able to meet future needs.

This project will update and redesign the library to create a relevant, refreshed and ecologically sustainable building.
