An exciting new chapter for Bendigo

Project Update

It is fantastic to see that the construction of our new facility is now at the stage of being out of the ground. All the foundations have now been poured, and we can expect to see the structure for the new external walls erected after Easter. Meanwhile, work is continuing inside the building with the electrical, mechanical and plumbing works, along with walls for the new rooms being constructed.

We recently enjoyed a visit from the Minister for Local Government, Hon Jeanette Powell, who chose our project site as the venue to announce the next round of funding for Victorian libraries. At the announcement, she said that the new generation library planned for Bendigo, is an example of an integrated facility that the State Government believes is necessary for libraries to meet community needs and expectations in the future, and we do too!

Some of the features you will enjoy in the new Bendigo library include:

• An exciting space where small groups can perform< plays and musical items, speakers can present and where story time for our youngest readers will be held.

• An inviting community space where you can catch up with friends, casually read the day's papers, magazines and browse the most recently released books, with a coffee from the convenience of our library cafe.

Our library staff are presently planning exciting new programs to run from our new generation library. You will have an opportunity to tell us what you would like to participate in (see below).

Have your say on what you want the new library to offer

With the expansion of community spaces in the new Bendigo library, we will be providing more programs and more services that meet the needs of our community. Therefore we will be seeking your feedback about what you want in your new generation library in the coming weeks.

However, there is nothing to stop you sending feedback to us now! You can provide suggestions and ideas about what programs and services you would like to see and do.

Please visit our website and our Facebook page and tell us what you think.

Library services now open at 96-98 Pall Mall, Bendigo (former Bendigo Advertiser building)

The City of Greater Bendigo and the Goldfields Library Corporation are working to ensure the redevelopment works have a minimal impact on library customers.

While the redevelopment work is being undertaken, library services are operating from 96-98 Pall Mall (former Bendigo Advertiser building).

The Goldfields Research Centre and Bendigo Regional Archives Centre is operating from 202 Hargreaves Street (former Tea Rose Bakery).

Goldfields Library Corporation CEO Carolyn Macvean says that while the temporary site is smaller than the existing site, most services will be available, but at a reduced level.

“We thank users in advance for their patience and remind them that all other Goldfields libraries are available to all Bendigo members and will continue to operate as usual throughout the construction phase. The nearest libraries are located at Kangaroo Flat, Eaglehawk and Castlemaine.”
