Bendigo to host premier bowls events

Friday 08 June 2012

The City of Greater Bendigo is poised to become the envy of the bowling community after securing the rights to host two of the sport's biggest events.

In a major coup, Bendigo will stage lawn bowls' showpiece events the 2013 Bowls Australia Awards Night and Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the same time the Bendigo Bowls Club plays host to the time-honoured Australian Sides Championships and Super 6 Challenge.

Commencing on Friday, April 26, the two-day Super 6 challenge kicks off a six-day lawn bowls extravaganza in Bendigo followed by the Australian Sides Championship, widely regarded as one of the nation's marquee tournaments, and features the top 12 men and women from each state and territory across the nation, fighting for the coveted Alley Shield and Marj Morris Trophy.

In an attempt to recognise the outstanding achievements of Australia’s finest bowlers and administrators, the sport’s awards night of nights will coincide for the first time with the iconic Bendigo Town Hall chosen as the ideal location to accommodate the major event on Saturday, April 27.

City of Greater Bendigo Mayor, Cr Alec Sandner said it was a privilege for the city to be awarded such prestigious events.

"We are delighted with the decision from Bowls Australia to award the City of Greater Bendigo the 2013 Australian Sides Championships and Super 6 challenge along with the opportunity to stage the Bowls Australia Awards Night and Hall of Fame function at the Bendigo Town Hall.

"This is certainly an endorsement of the A grade bowls facilities we have in Bendigo, and what the city has to offer by way of infrastructure. You don’t get to host events of this calibre if your City is not up to scratch,” said Cr Sandner.

In addition to the two national competitions, the City of Greater Bendigo has again secured the Bowls Victoria State Championships which will commence a fortnight of outstanding state and national bowls action from Thursday, April 11 until Wednesday, April 17 2013.

"The national events combined with the Bowls Victoria State Championships week will see two weeks of top level bowls action in Bendigo, providing an economic impact to Bendigo in the order of half a million dollars, “ Cr Sandner said.

Bowls Victoria CEO Peter Hanlon said he is delighted that Bowls Australia had decided to build on the excellent success of the Bowls Victoria "Champions Week" conducted in April 2012 in partnership with the City of Greater Bendigo and local bowls club officials and volunteers.

"Bowls Victoria, the Bendigo and Bendigo East Bowls Clubs, and indeed the entire Bendigo community have set a standard for championships that has obviously impacted upon Bowls Australia's decision to come to regional Victoria.

“We are delighted with the coming together of these major events in partnership with the City of Greater Bendigo and are confident that the cumulative effect of such wonderful events will be an outstanding promotion of the great game of bowls and its significant role in local communities," he said.

Bowls Australia CEO Neil Dalrymple said the organisation was delighted to be able to take two of its premier events to Bendigo.

"Bowls Australia is thrilled to be able to join with the City of Greater Bendigo to conduct these key events on the Australian lawn bowls calendar.

"The Australian Sides Championships and Super 6 are the premier events in state against state competition and to be able to combine these with our Awards Night and Hall of Fame induction ceremony in a strong bowling community like Bendigo is a great fillip for our sport.

"The best Australian talent will be showcased across six days of competition and I know that the people of Bendigo and surrounding communities will support these events,” said Mr Dalrymple.

Tickets for the Awards Night and Hall of Fame function will be available on www.bowlsaustralia.com.au  at a later date.
