City creates new emergency management position

Tuesday 29 May 2012

The City of Greater Bendigo has created a new Emergency Management Coordinator position to coordinate city services, outside agencies and the community, in the event of a major emergency.

City of Greater Bendigo’s Director of Organisation Support, Marg Allan said the city is currently exploring a more robust risk rating tool that can be used to assist its review of accessible data across the organisation and can be used as a tool when engaging with the community.

“I am pleased to announce that Karen Marini has been appointed to the permanent position of Emergency Management Coordinator.  Karen has worked for the City of Greater Bendigo for the past year in a project role to address the findings of the Bushfire Royal Commission and prior to that worked with the CFA for 10 years.

“This is the first time the City of Greater Bendigo has had a position solely dedicated to the coordination of emergency management.

“Expectations of Local Government’s role in emergencies have escalated with events such as Black Saturday, the Victorian Bushfire Royal Commission and the Flood Review.

“Our close connection with our community puts us in a good position to foster local knowledge and experience into our planning with the addition of this new role.

“We want to put ourselves in a better position to plan for the safety of our community into the future,” says Ms Allan.

Karen Marini said she was excited about her new role.

“I look forward to working with all parts of our organisation as well as with emergency service agencies and the community,” she said.
