With the fourth anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations fast approaching on Monday February 13, the City of Greater Bendigo in conjunction with the Bendigo District Aboriginal Cooperative (BDAC) is providing the media with an opportunity to speak directly to Mr. Charlie Knight – a member of the Stolen Generations at 10.30am Tuesday February 7 in the Bendigo Library Gardens.
This is a unique opportunity for the local media to gain an insight into what its means to have lived through this part of Australian history.
Charlie Knight, a member of the Ngarrindjeri Nation (SA) was stolen in the late 1950’s when he was just two years old. After being sent to Campbell House, he spent his childhood in nine different foster homes, where he suffered traumatic and emotional abuse. Charlie lost his culture, dignity, identity and family siblings. Charlie is now an advocate for the Stolen Generations.
On Monday February 13, the City of Greater Bendigo in partnership with BDAC will mark this important anniversary with a display at the City of Greater Bendigo Council office at 195 Lyttleton Terrace Bendigo.
The display will feature the actual apology made by Kevin Rudd in 2008 and a Pledge Book will be available for messages of reconciliation.
Everyone is welcome to visit the display from 10 am– 5:00 pm on Monday February 13.
The National Apology was a significant historical event in our nation’s history and the City of Greater Bendigo is proud to continue its close relationship with the local Indigenous community.
