Wednesday 23 May 2012

The City of Greater Bendigo is holding a public information session for all people interested in the upcoming October elections.

City of Greater Bendigo CEO Craig Niemann said the Community and Candidate information session will take place at 7pm on Tuesday May 29 in the Bendigo Town Hall reception room.

“Guest speakers will include Greater Shepparton City Councillor Geoff Dobson, City of Ballarat CEO Anthony Schinck and Municipal Association of Victoria representative Andrew Rowe.

“Cr Dobson, who was Mayor of Greater Shepparton from 2008 to 2011 will speak about why he became a councillor, what’s rewarding, what’s difficult, time commitments, working as a team and campaigning.

“Anthony Schinck who has been CEO of the City of Ballarat since 2008 will talk about community expectations, the relationships between councillors, the CEO and council staff, civic leadership and good governance.

“While MAV representative Andrew Rowe will talk about the Local Government Act, role clarity, working as a team, strategic planning and decision making,” said Mr Niemann.

Mr Niemann himself will provide an overview of the Greater Bendigo municipality, including  local issues and support provided to Councillors.

“The aim of the information session is to outline the roles and responsibilities of a Councillor, describe the election process and provide information on getting elected.

“The session will include an opportunity for open discussion and questions and each registered participant will receive a comprehensive information kit.

“I strongly encourage all residents who are thinking about standing for the next election to attend the information session,” said Craig Niemann.

The City of Greater Bendigo’s 2012 Council Election will be via postal vote with the election set for Saturday October 27, 2012.  The VEC will hold a further information session on what is required to stand for Council at 7.30pm Tuesday August 21, 2012 at the Bendigo Town Hall.

Due to a recent ward restructure three Councillors will be elected to each of the City of Greater Bendigo’s three new wards. Election nominations open on Thursday, September 20 and close at 12 noon on Tuesday, September 25.
