Council backs new tourism structure for region

Thursday 03 May 2012

The City of Greater Bendigo Council has endorsed a proposed new tourism structure and board for our region.

The new structure will see the City form an alliance to promote and develop the tourism industry in collaboration with the Shires of Mount Alexander, Central Goldfields and Loddon.

Mayor Cr Alec Sandner said the changes would see the Goldfields Region split into two sub-regions, one based on the Ballarat region and the other on the Bendigo region.

“This proposed new structure recognises that Bendigo and Ballarat are distinctively different regional cities which are over one-and-a-half hours apart and have different competitive strengths and marketing pursuits,” Cr Sandner said.

“It will enable each sub-region to more specifically promote and fully develop its own tourism attractions and industry.”

The changes are in response to a 2009 decision by Tourism Victoria to review and restructure tourism bodies across Victoria.

Cr Sandner said a new 10-member Board would be formed with four representatives from Greater Bendigo, two from Mount Alexander, two from Central Goldfields and two from Loddon Shire.

The Shires of Mount Alexander, Central Goldfields and Loddon are considering the proposed structure and will report back to their communities in due course.
