More great prizes on offer in 2012 Bendigo Inventor Awards Youth Categories

Thursday 28 June 2012

In 2012 the Bendigo Inventor Awards have teamed up with the Telstra Shops to provide even more great prizes for enterprising young students with great ideas who enter this year’s awards.

This year in addition to the $500 cash prizes already on offer in the youth categories, the Telstra shops have backed the awards by agreeing to provide iPads for both the winning primary and secondary students and the schools they represent.

The Telstra Shops are also supporting the awards with a significant cash contribution which will not only support all categories but will provide a further cash prize of $1,000 to each of the winning schools in the youth categories.

Peter Jeffery from the City of Greater Bendigo, Economic Development Unit said the increased prize pool for young entrants was recently announced at the new Bendigo Telstra Shop located at the corner of Mitchell and Hargreaves Streets.

“I’m delighted that the Telstra Shops have come on board with this year’s awards. Their support means we can now offer more prizes for more winners, across more categories.

“Winners in both the primary and secondary categories will receive $500 and an iPad and to help foster the innovative spirit, the winner’s schools will also benefit with each receiving a further prize of $1,000 and an iPad.

“The Telstra Shops and the Bendigo Inventor Awards committee are keen to help the next generation of our region’s innovators realize their potential and we’ll be working with local schools to encourage students to submit their entries,” said Mr Jeffery.

After taking out the 2011 Young Inventor of the Year Award with her carbon fibre wheel design, past winner Bronte McDonald outlined the reasons for her ongoing involvement in the awards.

“The application process is really straightforward, with staff on hand to help.  I didn’t feel disadvantaged as a young entrant and with the help I’ve received I’ve realised how easy it can be to become an inventor,” she said.

As well as the cash and prizes on offer, support and mentoring opportunities are also available to young inventors. Entries may also be eligible for other categories, with a total Bendigo Inventor Awards cash prize pool of $25,000.
