REDEVELOPED TOM FLOOD SPORTS CENTRE OFFICIALLY OPENED - 6/11/2009  Printer Friendly

The $2.5 million redevelopment of the Tom Flood Sports Centre was officially opened today by the Hon Jacinta Allan Member for Bendigo East and the Hon Bob Cameron Member for Bendigo West.

Mayor of Greater Bendigo Cr Kevin Gibbins said the reopening will mark the completion of an important project that commenced in 2008.

“Tom Flood is the home of cycling in Bendigo and each year is home to the Bendigo International Madison – one of the biggest cycling and athletic events in Australia.

“It is our city’s premier cycling facility and the redevelopment works have greatly improved spectator and other facilities at the centre.”

“The work that has been completed at Tom Flood has reinforced the centres natural amphitheatre which we believe will make it a much sought after venue for a range of new events for Greater Bendigo,” said Cr Gibbins.

He said the City of Greater Bendigo has secured a water source to maintain the centre and the improvement works have helped to create a stadium atmosphere which will enhance the city’s growing reputation as a major and events centre.

The project has included:-
•Construction of a new 150 metre long, architecturally designed shade canopy;
•Construction of a major new pavilion featuring male and female change rooms, male and female public toilets, internal and external disabled toilets, administrative facilities, storage, media room, meeting rooms and kitchen facilities;
•Construction of a new public toilet facility at the corner of Barnard Street and Park Road;
•Installation of new grassed terraces for spectators;
•Minor repairs to existing buildings, services and facilties;
•Improved entrances and landscaping

The redevelopment was undertaken with $1.5million funding from the State Government and a significant contribution from the City of Greater Bendigo.
