News>L2P LEARNER DRIVER MENTOR PROGRAM TO BE LAUNCHED
| A new L2P program where experienced drivers act as mentors to help learner drivers build up 120 hours of driving experience is set to be launched at BCentral on Monday November 9, 2009.
L2P is a TAC funded, VicRoads managed program that provides access to driving practice for learner drivers who have difficulty in gaining experience without community support. The program is supported by the City of Greater Bendigo, Lead On and VicRoads.
Getting a driver’s licence is a very exciting event in a young person’s life but for some it can be difficult to get the 120 hours of driving experience needed to go for their Probationary licence. Barriers faced by some young people can include lack of access to a vehicle, no suitable adult to practice driving with, or even homelessness.
Through the L2P program learner drivers are matched with a volunteer supervising driver from the community.
The learner drivers are referred to the program through local community agencies that identify significant barriers to the young person gaining their driver’s licence.
Five young local people have already been connected to the program through St Lukes with further referrals expected to come from Loddon Campaspe Multicultural Services.
Lead On has taken the lead role in delivering the program with funding provided by VicRoads. The program is also further supported by a $10,000 donation from the Rotary Club of Bendigo Sandhurst towards the provision of a vehicle from the City of Greater Bendigo.
Further information about the L2P program can be obtained by contacting Meryn Ryan at Lead On by phoning 5442 3177.
