News>ABORIGINAL FLAG TO PERMANENTLY FLY FROM TOWN HALL
| The Aboriginal Flag is set to become a permanent fixture on top of the Bendigo Town Hall.
Mayor of Greater Bendigo Cr. Rod Fyffe said Council has agreed to fly the flag from the Town Hall’s lower flag pole on a permanent basis from the commencement of this years NAIDOC Week.
Cr. Fyffe said Council has already shown a great commitment toward reconciliation and will continue to do so in the future.
“The flying of the Aboriginal Flag is only one of a number of initiatives planned for the future,” said Cr. Fyffe.
He said Council has formed a Reconciliation Working Party and has proactively shown support to the indigenous community by providing information about cultural issues in Council publications and by supporting Koori employment programs and NAIDOC Week activities.
“It is very important that we continue to work with our local aboriginal people and include them in the city’s major events.
“Anyone who attended the opening of the Commonwealth Youth Games last year and witnessed the entertainment provided by our indigenous population will realise just how important their presence was – it was a highlight of the ceremony.
“Council will continue to support a range of activities and initiatives centred around NAIDOC Week and we are currently exploring opportunities to involve young aboriginal people in the Queen’s Baton Relay, Commonwealth Games Cultural activities and the torch project
“Council is also planning to host an afternoon tea for elders and aboriginal representatives during Reconciliation Week and concepts for signage acknowledging Jaara Jaara Country and Sister Cities at the entrance to the municipality.
“We will also continue to say acknowledge the traditional owners of the land at the beginning of Council events,” said Cr. Fyffe.
He said Aboriginal Reconciliation was an important issue that had also featured strongly at the Bendigo+25 Future Search Conference.
