Rubbish and Recycling

Rubbish and recycling collection

Household garbage is collected weekly and recycling is collected on a fortnightly basis.

To find out when your garbage is collected, download the appropriate map below.

Your recycling will be collected on either week one or two.

The maps will indicate your week and the calendar can be used to find out the dates of your recycling collection.

Bins must be out ready for collection by 6am in the morning, weigh no more than 60kg and bin lids must be completely closed to ensure collection of recycling and garbage.

Public holidays

Garbage will be collected on all public holidays except Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Collections due on Good Friday will be undertaken the following Saturday.

Collections due on Christmas Day will be collected on the closest Saturday (i.e. if Christmas falls on Monday or Tuesday the collection will occur on the previous Saturday. When Christmas falls on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday the collection will take place the following Saturday).

Your Guide to residential recycling and waste services

The City of Greater Bendigo has produced a new free guide to residential recycling and waste services to assist residents with their home recycling and waste management.

The guide can be obtained from Customer Service Centres in Bendigo and Heathcote or to viewed on line click here.

Reporting a stolen or damaged bin

Please check your bin regularly for worn or damaged hinge pins.

If repairs are required, we will carry these out free of charge.

Faulty or damaged bins should be reported to our Customer Service Centre on 5434 6000 or email requests@bendigo.vic.gov.au

All bins remain the property of the City of Greater Bendigo and must not be taken from the property when relocating.

If your bin is stolen, a signed statement or a copy of the Police Report is required to obtain a new one.

Forms are available from our Customer Service Centres by calling 5434 6000 or downloading and returning these forms Residential Missing Bin or Commercial Missing Bin.

Hard rubbish collection

We do not offer a hard rubbish collection service to residents. This material can be disposed of at the Eaglehawk Eco-Centre, the Heathcote Landfill or a Transfer Station.

If residents require assistance with the removal of hard waste they should contact one of the private contractors listed under Rubbish Removers in the Yellow Pages.

Greenwaste

We do not provide a kerbside collection service for domestic green waste.

However residents who are interested in arranging a kerbside green waste collection service can contact Greenaway Bins Pty Ltd or phone 1300 033 606.

The Greenwaste is collected from 240 litre bins provided by the contractor. This service is solely to dispose of unwanted weeds, lawn clippings, garden pruning's (less than 50mm in diameter) and other approved organic matter by negotiation. Please contact Greenaway for more information.

While we commend and encourage this service, the City of Greater Bendigo has no involvement in the provision of this service. It is a commercial service and the conditions of collection are between Greenaway and the customer.

Downsize your waste

Part of our initiative to become a waste-wise city involves the opportunity for ratepayers to downsize to a smaller household rubbish bin.  A smaller bin will:

  • save you $81.50 on your rates
  • help the environment by decreasing the amount of rubbish going to landfill
  • be easier to move
  • need less storage space in your yard

The large household bins are 240 litres and the smaller bins are 140 litres.  In 2011/12, the charges are $196.50 for a large household bin and $115 for a smaller bin.

To register for your new bin contact our Customer Service Centre on 03 5434 6000 or email requests@bendigo.vic.gov.au
