The City of Greater Bendigo is currently undertaking a Master Plan for the rejuvenation and extension of the Botanic Gardens at White Hills, Bendigo. This will guide the restoration of the existing culturally significant site and also plan for the extension of the Gardens, creating a new, engaging and contemporary botanic gardens in what is now open paddocks.

As a precedent to the Master Plan, a Heritage Significance Assessment and Strategy (HSAS) for the existing gardens was produced in 2007, with the major recommendations of this adopted by council in September 2007.

Draft Master Plan on Public Exbihition
The draft master plan has been produced with significant community consultation and input to provide a long term vision for one of the city’s oldest and most important parks.

The master plan recommends a restoration of the existing heritage gardens to the original layout along with the inclusion of new garden beds featuring heritage plants. It also proposes a range of works and initiatives including a major extension to the gardens which will feature:-
  • A new contemporary garden area featuring botanical collections;
  • A Botanic park with an arboretum (tree collection);
  • Children’s garden and play space;
  • Barbecue, picnic areas and car parking;
  • Development of a new Aquatic Facility;
  • Development of new main entrance and paved central plaza events space;
  • Development of central water ponds in Bendigo Creek complete with wetland plantings and board walk;
  • Construction of a Cast Iron Conservatory;
  • Construction of a central events/amenities building;

    Other key recommendations of the master plan are:
  • Appointment of a Curator;
  • Establishment of a ‘Home for Horticulture’ for plant and garden interested community groups;
  • Development of an education plan and appointment of an education officer so the gardens can be used as an education facility.

    Due to the size of the document it is available to download in sections below.

    Submissions on the plan can be made by email to info@bendigo.vic.gov.au or by post to Landscape and Open Space Planning, City of Greater Bendigo, PO Box 733 Bendigo 3552 by November 27, 2009.
