| The City of Greater Bendigo and the Bendigo Basketball Association have been successful in attracting the 2010 and 2011 Basketball Australia National Schools Championships to Bendigo.
City of Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Kevin Gibbins said the Basketball Australia National Schools Championships will take place between December 6 and 10, 2010 at the Schweppes Centre and will involve some 1,500 participants from throughout Australia.
"This is a massive coup for the city because the participants will spend up to four nights in our city and with that will come an estimated injection of $1.5M into the local economy. Itâ??s great news for local businesses and the community," said Cr Gibbins.
He said the City of Greater Bendigo has been working with local organisations including the Bendigo Basketball Association to attract a range of major music, lifestyle, cultural, agricultural, community and sporting events to Bendigo.
"Bendigo is fast becoming known amongst event organisers as a great destination with a central location and a strong ability to cater to a range of events because we offer quality venues, accommodation, food and other facilities that visitors require."
"The City's reputation as a major regional events centre is growing and we are putting runs on the board especially in terms of the number and calibre of sporting events we have attracted in recent times.
"Events such as the William Loud Bendigo International Tennis Pro Tour event in December, the Australian Open Junior Qualifying Championships in January 2010, Little Athletics Victoria State Multi Events in January 2010 and the Football Federation Victoria State Futsal Championships in July 2010 are definitely putting Bendigo on the map," said Cr Gibbins.
He said events like the 2010 and 2011 Basketball Australia National Schools Championships are very lucrative for Greater Bendigo and the City of Greater Bendigo will continue to work hard to attract similar events to the region.
Bendigo Stadium Ltd CEO Ron Stockdale said today's announcement confirms Bendigo Stadium is the premier basketball venue in Country Victoria.
"Our expertise and professionalism at the Bendigo Stadium played a major role in winning the tender for this event.
"Out of eight country associations who applied for this tender Bendigo reached the final two. Dayne Frew and Dean Vigus met with Basketball Australia National Teams and Competitions General Manager Lorraine Landon to make a presentation on our venue and our ability to showcase such a competition. This proved to Basketball Australia that we have the knowledge and structure in place to hold this event.
"This is going to be a very exciting time for Bendigo Basketball and the Bendigo community," said Mr Stockdale.
