Bendigo Urban Stormwater Program

Cartoon drawing of tin roofed house with poppet head in the background. The City of Greater Bendigo is currently implementing the Bendigo Urban Stormwater Program, to improve water quality leaving the shire. This program involves all members of the urban community, as we all have a role to play in reducing pollution.

What is Urban Stormwater?

Urban Stormwater is runoff from pavements, roads, roofs and bare ground around town. This runoff picks up pollution and dumps it, untreated into waterways.

Urban stormwater is different to sewage.

Most sewage comes from the bathroom, kitchen and laundry inside homes. This pollution is directed from towns and into sewage treatment plants via the sewerage system or is treated in septic tanks.

What is the problem with urban stormwater?

Urban stormwater pollution adds toxic chemicals, nutrients and sediment to your waterways. This pollution affects the health of your creeks, and can lead to: fish kills, blue-green algae blooms; weed growth; or provide food and shelter for feral animals.

Who is responsible?

We all have a responsibility to protect water quality now and into the future. As stormwater pollution can come from every home, business and public space, we must work together to reduce waste and pollution. City of Greater Bendigo need community assistance and support to implement the Stormwater Management Plan through the Bendigo Urban Stormwater Program.
