2017 Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year

Congratulations to Citizen of the Year Garth Keech and Young Citizen of the Year Khayshie Tilak Ramesh, the top citizens for 2017.

About Garth Keech

Garth has been actively involved in the 1st Strathfieldsaye Scout Group for more than 20 years, including serving on the committee in various roles. He has also overseen the rebuilding and refurbishing of the Scout Hall in Strathfieldsaye.

Garth has been the organiser of the Strathfieldsaye Australia Day breakfast for the last 15 years. In 2015, he was recognised by Rotary for his contribution to Australia Day and was made an Australia Day ambassador.

Garth has coached soccer for Strathfieldsaye Colts, been a goal umpire and medic for Strathfieldsaye Storm Football Club, coached volleyball at Girton Grammar School and is a proud supporter of the Bendigo Fighting Miners Rugby Union Club .

Garth owns and runs a successful Bendigo business that has been inducted into the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame and he has recently been named a ‘Legend’ of the Australian Foundry Industry. Garth has also been a generous donor to many community fundraising appeals, including the Ulumbarra Theatre.

About Khayshie Tilak Ramesh

Khayshie is a high achieving law student who volunteers for Benetas, is an academic mentor and a Young Humanitarian Leader for the Red Cross. Khayshie is also the Co-Founder and Vice President of the Young People for Refugees, a Bendigo-based group of young people who work to support and raise awareness of refugee issues in Australia.

As part of her work with Young People for Refugees, Khayshie has been involved with organising social events which have focused on creating overall cohesion within the local community. These events have included walks, refugee visits and concerts.

Khayshie also serves on the Community Leadership Loddon Murray board and was recently named as one of Australia’s Top 100 future leaders. Additionally, Khayshie is also a finalist in the Ashurst Law category of the Top 100 competition.
