Heathcote - Strathfieldsaye Heritage Study 2002
In 2001, the City of Greater Bendigo contracted Fisher Stewart (later Earth Tech) to conduct the Heathcote and Strathfieldsaye Heritage Study, which was completed in 2002.
The Study is Stage 1 of a two-part investigation into the history of development of the Heathcote and Strathfieldsaye localities and the identification of places of potential cultural significance within the study area.
The report includes a thematic environmental history of post-contact settlement and development of the study area. It identifies all post-contact places of potential cultural significance in the study area. It also estimates the resources required to fully research, document and assess all post-contact places of potential cultural significance in the study area.
The report finds that mining, forestry and agricultural production were important elements of this area’s early settlement and development. The contribution of water for irrigation and other purposes was perhaps one of the strongest factors that shaped Heathcote and Strathfieldsaye’s development and set it apart from most other places.
The report identifies 325 places of potential cultural significance. The Former Shires of McIvor and Strathfieldsaye heritage study 2009 completed by Context Pty Ltd reviewed these formers shires again and recommended the protection of a number of places by heritage overlay.
