The City of Greater Bendigo is pleased to announce that artist Minna Leunig has been chosen to create a new large scale mural on the side of a building on the corner of Myers Street and Mitchell Street in the city centre.

The artist works primarily in black, white and earthy pigments to create playful, primal and earthy images inspired by the natural world.

Ms Leunig is a Melbourne-based artist who grew up in rural north-east Victoria where she developed a love and respect of the Australian landscape. She spent her childhood exploring the bush on foot and horseback with her dogs, The presence of animals both domesticated and wild and many botanical varieties have been strong influences in her art work.

City Coordinator Creative Communities Maree Tonkin said she was delighted that Ms Leunig had been chosen to create an original large scale work on the side of the building at 95 Mitchell Street.

“The artist pays homage to the natural world and she brings a personality and spirit, joy and humour to her artwork that is inspired by the life force of the bush and a deep connection to Country and its creatures,” Ms Tonkin said.

“Ms Leunig has exhibited her work at numerous galleries but is keen to bring art out of gallery spaces into public areas through street art and that is based on a philosophy that art should be an integral part of everyday life and accessible to all.

“The finished mural will be a great addition to the street art scene that has developed across Greater Bendigo in the past few years, including the transformed Pennyweight Walk, Bath Lane and Chancery Lane murals, Art in the Conservatory and the Elmore Swimming Pool platypus mural.”

The artist will start installing her work from May 24 to June 8.
