Bendigo Emergency Relief Centre to close October 27

The Bendigo Emergency Relief Centre will close tomorrow, Thursday October 27.

The City of Greater Bendigo opened the centre at the Bendigo Showgrounds on Thursday October 13 in response to the impacts of the recent flood event.

The majority of evacuees have been able to move into longer-term, temporary accommodation or return home.

At its peak, the centre was caring for 280 people each night, with most of the evacuees coming from the Rochester and Echuca areas.

City Director Andrew Cooney said approximately 15 people remained at the centre who were being supported to finalise their accommodation needs.

“Over the past week, as it became evident this flood event will have a long-term impact, evacuees were supported to find alternate accommodation or return home,” Mr Cooney said.

“A range of agencies have been based at the centre since it opened, helping evacuees with their physical and mental health, accessing State and Federal government funding, and finding somewhere to live. As the flood affected communities further north move into the recovery phase, these staff can continue to provide support in these areas.

“The relief centre was a short-term, emergency option. It opened quickly and can be re-opened quickly should there be a need in the future.

“I would like to acknowledge and thank City staff that have worked around the clock to run the centre, coordinate support, and ensure the evacuees were well cared for and could enjoy as much comfort as possible, despite their traumatic experience.

“The recovery process from this flood event will be long and I encourage our community to look for opportunities to volunteer and lend a hand into the future.”

Anyone needing to evacuate from the Echuca floods can attend the Echuca Emergency Relief Centre at the Echuca South Basketball Stadium, 244 High Street, Echuca.
