Essential projects, big benefits

Greater Bendigo City Council has listed its Annual Plan initiatives to progress the Community Plan 2017-2021 as part of this year’s 2019/2020 proposed Budget document.

Council has itemised initiatives under each strategic goal. These include:

Lead and govern for all

  • Progress plans for the GovHub project and complete the sale of land process for the  Lyttleton Terrace site
  • Advocate for priority issues and projects that impact on the region, including a developing a regional resource recovery centre or other appropriate long term waste solution, pursuing the Qantas Pilot Training Academy at Bendigo Airport or other academies,  Bendigo Law Courts, transport links including Bendigo Metro rail and a Regional Deal for Bendigo

Wellbeing and fairness

  • Complete the detailed design of a Greater Bendigo Food Hub
  • Develop and implement a local food strategy for the region
  • Implement an All Ages All Abilities Action Plan
  • Deliver a range of facility improvements to support active and healthy lifestyles, including the completion of the Garden Gully pavilion and construction of a skate park
  • Expansion of Huntly Early Learning Centre to create an early years hub to support population growth

Strengthening the economy

  • Advocate for funding for the National Chinese Museum of Australia
  • Further development of the Bendigo Airport terminal building and business park
  • Complete the Industrial Land Development Strategy and implement the agreed priorities
  • Complete the City Centre Plan, which includes the Parking Strategy 
  • Adopt the Greater Bendigo Economic Statement and Strategy 

Presentation and managing growth

  • Major drainage project at west Marong 
  • Roundabout installation at the intersection of Averys  Road and Jobs Gully Road in Jackass Flat
  • Sealing roads, including a section of the Heathcote-North Costerfield Road and extension of the sealed road along O’Briens Lane in Longlea up to Hawkins Lane
  • Investigation of flood mitigation throughout Kangaroo Flat/Golden Square and along Racecourse Creek in Epsom   

Environmental sustainability

  • Development of detailed design for a new resource recovery centre and transfer facility in Greater Bendigo
  • Progress the rehabilitation of landfills at Eaglehawk, White Hills and Wolstencroft 
  • Continue to implement the Greater Bendigo Environment Strategy actions for 2019/2020

Embracing our culture and heritage

  • Renewal of our buildings and heritage assets, including Eaglehawk Town Hall, QEO Cottage and Bendigo Town Hall  
  • Advocate for funding for the Bendigo Tramways workshop expansion 
  • Advocate for funding for artefact storage at Nolan Street

Mayor Cr Margaret O’Rourke said the Annual Plan represented Council’s initiatives for the community for the financial year.

“We believe this Annual Plan continues our work towards achieving our vision to create the world’s most liveable community,” Cr O’Rourke said.

“The Annual Plan is included in the Budget and both documents work together on delivering the Community Plan for the financial year.”

Submissions to the proposed 2019/2020 Budget are best submitted by completing an online form at www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/budget  by close of business Friday May 17, 2019. Residents may also elect to have their submission heard at a meeting at Council to be held on Wednesday May 22, 2019 at 5.30pm at the main office, 195 Lyttleton Terrace, Bendigo.
