Celebrate National Agriculture Day in the Library Gardens

Leave feedback

National Agriculture Day will be celebrated in Bendigo’s Library Gardens from 11.30am to 1.30pm on Wednesday November 21 with displays, information, activities, giveaways of local produce and a free sausage sizzle.

The 2018 theme for the day is #GrowforGood to demonstrate how agriculture can unite a country in times of hardship and in times of joy.  Participants can also donate to the Buy a Bale for farmers in drought affected areas campaign.

The City of Greater Bendigo, Bendigo TAFE Food and Fibre Centre of Excellence, Bendigo Regional Food Alliance Inc., WFI Insurance, Access Australia, North Central Catchment Management Authority and Victorian Farmers Federation, have joined forces to plan the day and highlight the sector.

City of Greater Bendigo Community Partnerships Manager Steven Abbott said National Agriculture Day provides an opportunity to recognise and celebrate farming, the value of the sector beyond the farm gate including local produce, provision of healthy sustainable local food, animal health, farmer support and advocacy, agricultural education and rural development strategies.

“Agriculture is a very important sector for the Greater Bendigo economy and it’s great to see all our partner organisations come together to celebrate and support the day,” Mr Abbott said.

“Greater Bendigo has 552 businesses that operate in the agricultural production sector. Agribusiness accounts for $1,196.292 million or 8.7 per cent of Greater Bendigo’s total economic output.  The sector also provides 2,949 jobs which is 6.2 per cent of local jobs.

“A strong farming sector is very important to the overall liveability of Greater Bendigo and the region.

“The City is also committed to the sector through its Farming Advisory Committee and its Rural Communities Strategy.  National Agriculture Day is an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the sectors importance and the City’s commitment to it.”
