City completes new environmentally friendly asphalt project

A project to pave the domestic waste drop off and weighbridge areas at the Eaglehawk Landfill with an environmentally friendly asphalt mix containing a large volume of recycled materials is now complete. 

The asphalt used in the project was produced from approximately:

  • 586,000 recycled plastic bottles
  • 303,000 recycled glass bottles, and
  • 66.5 tonne of recycled asphalt

The area has been paved using a new Boral asphalt product to provide a much better experience for customers when they visit the landfill to drop off their waste.

City of Greater Bendigo Director Presentation and Assets Debbie Wood said the City is committed to sustainability and was leading by example by utilising such an environmentally friendly asphalt product.

“This has been an exciting project for the City as we are keen to support the use of sustainable products where possible.  When the opportunity to use this type of asphalt in this project we thought it was a good way to demonstrate a project using recycled materials,” Ms Wood said.

“We hope that this asphalt project will inspire a greater acceptance of using recycled products in this way.

“The Boral asphalt product has been used in only two other projects in Perth and Newcastle so it’s creating a lot of interest from other local governments, business and organisations throughout Australia who are keen to use recycled material in their projects.

“While the landfill itself only has a limited life span the facility will continue to operate as a transfer station into the future and this project is about preparing for that transition.

“The City has been implementing a range of improvements at the landfill site from creating the new domestic drop off area to extending the waste loading shed which allows waste to be transported from the site.”
