City to farewell Director Presentation and Assets Debbie Wood

City of Greater Bendigo Director Presentation and Assets Debbie Wood has accepted a new role as Director Infrastructure and Environment at the City of Whittlesea.

Ms Wood will be leaving the City after more than four years, having first joined the organisation as Manager Parks and Open Space in May 2016 before stepping into the Director role in March 2018.

In this role she has overseen the management of the Engineering, Parks and Open Space, Property Services, Resource Recovery and Education, and Works units.

Chief Executive Officer Craig Niemann said Ms Wood had made a valuable contribution to the organisation and led a hard-working team that delivered great outcomes for the community.

“Debbie has been a thoughtful and caring member of the Executive Management Team and sound advisor to Council. We will miss her enthusiasm but wish her well in this exciting next chapter,” Mr Niemann said.

“Under her guidance, Debbie’s staff have trialled the use of new materials in road and other construction projects, introduced a commercial organics waste trial and free green waste disposal, continued to build and maintain significant infrastructure and community facilities, project managed the redevelopment of the Bendigo Soldiers Memorial Institute, and introduced a new speed limit in the city centre and completed a number of pedestrian safety works.

“Staff have also won a number of awards, including state and national recognition for playspace design, the restoration of Alexandra Fountain, a sustainability award for the Soldiers Memorial Institute project, and two Green Flag awards for Rosalind Park.”

Ms Wood said she would miss her colleagues but had greatly enjoyed her time at the City.

“It was a very hard decision to move on, but I have really appreciated the opportunity to contribute to the development of Greater Bendigo and been proud to lead such a capable and talented team,” she said.

“A particular highlight was achieving back-to-back Green Flag awards. This award sets an international benchmark in public open space and Rosalind Park is one of only two parks outside a capital city in Australia to have achieved this.”

Ms Wood is currently on annual leave. She will return next week and her last day with the City will be Wednesday November 4.
