City volunteers thanked for their role in delivering services

To celebrate National Volunteer Week, the City of Greater Bendigo will acknowledge the important work of up to 500 volunteers at a special morning tea to be held at the Ulumbarra theatre this Wednesday, May 19.

Mayor Cr Jen Alden said the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on volunteers last year and the City wanted to thank them for their valuable contribution.

“I wish to acknowledge and thank our volunteers who play a vital role for the benefit of our community,” Cr Alden said.

“We have up to 500 volunteers at the City and in pre-COVID times they contributed over 30,000 hours a year in service.

“We frankly couldn’t do all that we do without the help of our volunteers who give their time to support a range of City activities, from assisting with major events and festivals to providing help in home support or looking after our natural environment.

“We are very grateful to have a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers who want to give something back to their community and who have adapted very well since their return in March, embracing new learnings in COVID-safe practices to keep themselves and others safe.

“Some volunteers have decided not to resume their volunteer role at the City as a result of the pandemic and their own health concerns. I would like to thank them for their service.

“Volunteering helps create a stronger, more connected and more resilient community and we always need volunteers, more so in light of the pandemic, so I strongly encourage you to please consider the many exciting opportunities available at the City.”
