Greater Bendigo to host important Climate Summit in May and everyone is welcome!

The Greater Bendigo Climate Collaboration (GBCC) is inviting members of the wider community to attend the Greater Bendigo Climate Summit on Saturday May 27, at Ulumbarra Theatre.

The Greater Bendigo Climate Summit is for anyone who is interested to learn how they can respond to climate change and create rapid change in Greater Bendigo.

There will be two parts to the summit a free day time session from 9am to 5pm and an evening session from 6pm to 8.30pm for the low cost of $5 featuring inventor, scientist and author of The Big Switch Dr Saul Griffith and a panel of Bendigo leaders who will discuss how to electrify Greater Bendigo with him.

City of Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf said attendees will hear from the Hon. Lily D’Ambrosio, Minister for Climate Action, Energy and Resources and State Electricity Commission, enjoy a Great Debate hosted by ABC Radio National’s Natasha Mitchell on how to create zero emissions in transport, witness an Interfaith Climate Statement, a panel discussion on Climate Justice and view the movie Regeneration by Damon Gameau.

“This event will be a source of hope and inspiration and a great opportunity for everyone to gain some valuable information,” Cr Metcalf said.

“By attending you will learn how can we reach zero emissions together by 2030, what you can do, what we can do together and what we can advocate for together.

“Central to the summit is an invitation to have your say on the Greater Bendigo Zero Emissions Roadmap, created over the past year with over 1000 Bendigo people from our community, leading businesses, community groups, partners and experts.   This is an opportunity to add your voice and let us know what is missing and what we need more of.

“There will also be an opportunity to create your own household Zero Emissions Roadmap, have your climate questions answered at stalls and demonstrations or by attending a series of practical workshops on topics such as how the community can get involved in climate action, reducing emissions from your home, food and transport and local carbon offsets.  Attendees can also participate in a climate adaptation game and enjoy music and art.

“At the evening session attendees will be inspired by inventor, scientist and author of The Big Switch Dr Saul Griffith, who argues that we already have everything we need to solve climate change, and we can start by simply electrifying everything.  Dr Griffith says that solar and wind are already the cheapest energy sources available and when combined with all electric homes and electric cars we can power a new economy and save a lot of money.

“A panel of Bendigo leaders will discuss with him how to electrify Greater Bendigo and launch the Greater Bendigo Zero Emissions Climate Clock.”
