Healthy Heart of Victoria launches new boardwalk an path upgrades at Kangaroo Flat's Gateway Park

A new boardwalk and path connections at Kangaroo Flat’s Gateway Park will be officially opened by Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Jennifer Alden on Wednesday May 12.

The $200,000 project, led and funded by the Healthy Heart of Victoria initiative, includes the construction of a new 46 metre custom-built boardwalk and 120 metre connecting concrete path to make the precinct more accessible for the community and encourage the community be more active more often.

The results from the 2019 Active Living Census highlighted that walking is the most popular physical activity within Kangaroo Flat and Greater Bendigo and this new infrastructure will help provide a greater connection around the lake and with the Bendigo Creek Linear Trail.

City of Greater Bendigo Health and Wellbeing Director Vicky Mason said the City is excited to see the new boardwalk and path now available as part of the Healthy Heart of Victoria’s work in Greater Bendigo.

“The Kangaroo Flat community told us that they wanted the area around Gateway Park to be more accessible for physical activity and active travel, so we’re pleased to be able provide them with these important upgrades that were highlighted within the precinct master plan,” Ms Mason said.

“As part of the installation of the boardwalk, which is made from sustainably sourced hardwood, 2000 new plants will also be planted to regenerate the area and create an enjoyable natural walking and cycling experience around the waterway.

“In addition, Healthy Heart of Victoria has also supported the installation of other infrastructure in the Kangaroo Flat area such as outdoor fitness equipment, solar lighting, new seating and other path connections to help the local community to be more active.”

The initiative is also hosting a series of free exercise sessions with qualified instructors at the Kangaroo Flat outdoor fitness equipment for three weeks from May 17 to encourage people to be active in outdoor recreation spaces.
