The City of Greater Bendigo’s Youth Council have elected Ryan Peterson as the 2023 Youth Mayor and Lilly Correll and Remus Brasier as joint Deputy Youth Mayors.

The Youth Council has just commenced a new two-year term with 18 young people (eight new and ten returning) members appointed for the 2023/2024 term at a meeting this week in the Bendigo Town Hall attended by Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf and Councillors, family and friends.

2023 Youth Mayor Ryan Peterson said he was excited to undertake the role of Youth Mayor and thanked outgoing Youth Mayor Victoria Tangey for her leadership and contribution during 2022.

“It’s fantastic to be elected Youth Mayor for a second term after also having held the position in 2020,” Mr Peterson said.

“It’s an honour to be appointed the 2023 Youth Mayor and I’m thrilled to be working with two very capable Deputy Youth Mayors in Lilly Correll and Remus Brasier.

“My goal for this year, is to build on all of the great work we’ve been doing up to now, and with the support of the City, Mayor and Councillors I believe we can further our achievements in 2023.

Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf said she congratulated new Youth Mayor Ryan Peterson and looked forward to working with the Youth Council in 2023.

“The Youth Council is an initiative to engage with local young people in the City’s decision-making process for the future,” Cr Metcalf said.

“The Youth Council represents the views of young people on City plans and programs that impact them and represent young people at civic events and activities.

“The first four years of the Youth Council have been very successful with Youth Councillors providing input into over 40 City plans, strategies, policies and projects, including the Council Plan 2021-2025, Healthy Greater Bendigo 2021-2025 plan, the Kangaroo Flat Skate Park project, the Social Justice Framework 2022-2032, the Healthy Facilities Policy and the Progress Pride Flag mural project. Youth Councillors are currently providing direction on the finalisation of the City’s Youth Action Plan 2023-2024.
