The City of Greater Bendigo is calling for nominations for the 2020 Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year awards.

Mayor Cr Margaret O’Rourke encouraged Greater Bendigo residents to nominate someone who they think should be recognised for their important contribution to the community.

“We’re looking for those unsung heroes and quiet achievers who should be awarded for all of their great volunteer work or contribution they make to our community with little fuss or fanfare.” Cr O’Rourke said.

"Nominations are open to anyone who contributes their time through community service, sporting or academic achievement, or volunteers their service to arts and culture or the environment,

“The Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year awards are a great way to acknowledge their efforts.

“There are also lots of young residents under 25 who volunteer their time and are passionate about making the world and our community a better place. Let us know who you think should be recognised as a worthy recipient of the Young Citizen of the Year award.

“All you need to do is let us know in a short paragraph what makes your nominee an outstanding community member, how they are role models for others to follow or how they have excelled or contributed to the Greater Bendigo community.”

The Citizen of the Year and the Young Citizen of the Year will each receive a certificate and a special name badge, which can be worn at civic functions. The recipients’ names will also be added to the Honour Board in the Town Hall.

The award winners will be invited to attend several civic events in 2020, including citizenship ceremonies.

Nominations can be made online at www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/citizenoftheyear. The closing date is by 5pm Friday November 29, 2019.

Recipients of the awards will be announced in the lead up to Australia Day and invited to attend the Lake Weeroona celebrations on Sunday January 26, 2020.

Nominees must be residents of the City of Greater Bendigo and the Young Citizen of the Year must be under 25 years of age on January 26, 2020.
