Pop up garden in Pennyweight Walk adds colour to city centre

Shoppers and visitors in the city centre can enjoy a new pop up secret garden that brings floral spring colours and local artworks to Pennyweight Walk.

Floral canopies, young trees and garden boxes filled with pansies, violas and living plants are displayed all along Pennyweight Walk. Local creatives have produced specially commissioned flower-themed artworks.

City of Greater Bendigo staff from Parks and Open Space and Tourism and Major Events  worked closely with creative collaborative Nacho Station and artist Frankie O to develop the city activation feature.

The secret garden is a new highlight in the City’s successful Bloom marketing campaign, which celebrates the region’s tulip displays and promotes a variety of Greater Bendigo experiences for residents and visitors from regional Victoria to explore in spring.

City Manager Tourism and Major Events Terry Karamaloudis said the secret garden was a creative and fun way to activate Pennyweight Walk.

“The secret garden is a little bit of fun and quite unexpected in the city centre, and I’m sure shoppers and visitors will enjoy walking through the splash of colour in Pennyweight Walk, taking selfies and sharing them,” Mr Karamaloudis said.

“People can also contribute by drawing flowers or plants on the blackboard walls along the laneway.

“Those strolling in the evening can enjoy the secret garden lit up at night, and you may even spot a hidden gnome or two.

“The aim of the secret garden, like all of our activation projects, is to draw people in and encourage shoppers and regional visitors to stay longer in the city centre.”

The temporary secret garden is expected to remain in Pennyweight Walk until around mid-November.
