Residents encouraged to love their favourite local businesses and community this Christmas
Thinking Christmas, think about your local community!
As the festive season approaches, the City of Greater Bendigo is encouraging residents to support their favourite local businesses this Christmas and, if they can, add a random act of kindness or gift to their list for someone in need.
Chief Executive Officer Craig Niemann said shopping locally was easy, convenient and provided a great boost to our retail sector.
“Everywhere you go, the Love Your Local stickers in shop windows are a great reminder that we’re all in this together and to spend locally during this festive season is a great way to help our community recover from the pandemic,” Mr Niemann said.
“Whether you are buying lots of presents or only a few, this year more than ever we need to put the goods and services of Greater Bendigo’s retailers on our shopping lists.
“From the city centre, to our suburbs and small towns, we can all think of businesses across our region that provide great service and unique products. If people don’t want to go out, many of our businesses have great online and delivery options too.
“When we love our local businesses, we’re also helping to keep local people in jobs and supporting our economy. For every $100 spent in a local business, up to $70 stays in our community. This is compared to only $3 when we shop online from a store located outside Greater Bendigo.
“It’s also important to recognise that after such a challenging year, there will be people and families in our community that are feeling uneasy about Christmas and it will be a tough period for them.
“The City is encouraging residents that are in a position to be buying gifts to also consider purchasing one for someone in our community they may not know.
“The smallest random act of kindness could bring the joy of Christmas to someone who really needs it. There are many charities that operate in Greater Bendigo, your workplace may offer a giving program, or you may know a neighbour or a family that would really appreciate someone thinking of them this Christmas.
“However you prepare for Christmas, think about our local community, love your favourite local businesses and together let’s show our strong community spirit.”
