The City of Greater Bendigo in partnership with Goldfields Library Corporation will install a new book box in Hargreaves Mall in time to celebrate National Book Week.

The book box will be a permanent fixture in the mall, with books provided by the library. A book box allows people to read or borrow books at their leisure and then return the book to the box when they have finished with it, for someone else to enjoy.

Mayor Cr Margaret O’Rourke said the book box was a popular concept in many other cities and towns.

“The book box is a great initiative to encourage children to read and share books,” Cr O’Rourke said.

“The box will house children’s books that are regularly updated to ensure a good variety for young readers.”

Cr O’Rourke said the book box was just one of many initiatives planned for the city centre in the coming months.

“We plan to install a new pop-up park in spring and work is progressing on the design review of Hargreaves Mall.

“Work is underway on the former mining exchange restoration which is fantastic to see and on Saturday we will have a free Blues and Roots taster event in Hargreaves Mall from 11am – 2pm.

“It’s great to see lots of positive things taking shape in the city centre which will continue over spring and summer.”
