Business as usual for recycling collections in Greater Bendigo
Household recycling collections will continue as usual in Greater Bendigo as the City works to seek further clarity around a decision by Visy to stop receiving recyclable materials from some contractors.
City of Greater Bendigo Resource Recovery and Education Manager, Brooke Pearce said the City’s recycling collection contract is with Veolia – a large international waste and resource management company.
“Veolia collect the recyclables from local households and Endeavour a local not for profit receive and sort the recyclable material,” Ms Pearce said.
“At this stage the City has been advised by its contractors that they will continue to collect and process recyclables from local households.
“The City is committed to reducing waste and would like to let the community know that it is business as usual and residents should continue to sort and recycle their waste and put their bins out for collection as they normally would.
“We certainly don’t want to see any residents placing recyclables in their general waste bin.
“Over the past few years the City has committed considerable resources and effort into educating the community about sorting their waste and recyclables and we want to ensure the community that no recyclable material collected from local households will be sent to landfill.
“The City will continue to work closely with the Victorian Government, the Loddon Mallee Waste Resource Regional Group and our contractors to ensure that the community is not impacted and to find a sustainable, long term solution for recyclable resources.
“We hope to have some clear direction from the Victorian Government in the near future.”
