Candidates encouraged to get informed and involved now
With candidates already putting their names forward for next year’s Council election, Mayor Cr Peter Cox says there are plenty of opportunities for those thinking of standing to gain a good understanding of the work involved.
The election will be held on October 22, 2016 and Cr Cox today said the better informed candidates are before polling day, the faster they will settle into their new role if elected.
“Being a Councillor is one of the most rewarding things you can ever do. What other job lets you play such a leading role in the future development of the city in which you live,” he said.
“But being elected for the first time can also be a bit daunting particularly in the beginning when it can feel as though you are being inundated with information.
“It doesn’t need to be that way. There are plenty of opportunities for residents thinking of running for Council to be informed and get involved now.
“There will be plenty of opportunities for potential candidates to get informed and involved with information sessions in the lead up to the election and a community forum on the Council Plan and Budget being planned for later this month.
“The forum is a great way to not only have input, but also to gain a better understanding of the important and strategic role that Councillors play in planning for Greater Bendigo’s future (further details shortly).
“I also encourage potential candidates to attend meetings and check out information sheets that are now available on the City of Greater Bendigo website at www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/councilelections.
“I urge potential candidates not to leave their involvement with local government until nominations open in September 2016. Get involved now.”
