City calls for creative ideas for Hargreaves Mall bus shelter area
The City of Greater Bendigo is seeking creative ideas to reinvigorate the area in and around the bus shelter in Hargreaves Mall.
The City is looking for temporary retail or food or beverage ideas that would complement rather than compete with existing businesses in the precinct.
Director Strategy and Growth Bernie O’Sullivan said there was a good opportunity to activate the Mitchell Street-end of the mall.
“Since the shelter was constructed bus timetables have changed and more people are now waiting for the bus on the other side of Mitchell Street,” Mr O’Sullivan said.
“After listening to traders it became clear that we needed to have a look at how we could get some complementary commercial activity and vibrancy into the Mitchell Street-end of Hargreaves Mall.
“We thought we would see what creative ideas were out there in the community.
“The Bus Shelter Pop-Up project is all about creating a more interesting offer for shoppers and visitors and getting more people, more often in the city centre.
“The space is relatively small, particularly the area that is under cover, however there is scope to use nearby paved areas for creative displays or seating.
“We are looking forward to seeing what ideas people have.”
The project is one of a number of actions the City is working on in the city centre, including undertaking a design review of the Hargreaves Mall, removing delivery vehicles from the mall to improve safety and creating a public ‘book box’ in partnership with the Bendigo Library.
A new pop-up park is also due to be installed in Hargreaves Mall in spring.
Expressions of interest can be submitted online and are open until August 13, 2018.
