City to commence timed parking trial around Cathedral precinct
The City of Greater Bendigo will next week commence a parking trial in residential streets near the Sacred Heart Cathedral and Girton Grammar’s junior school campus.
A number of two hour time-restricted parking bays will be installed for a four-month period, with the time restriction to apply from 8.30am – 5.30pm Monday to Friday. Signage will be installed.
The trial will inform the development of the revised Residential Parking Policy and is in response to enquiries from residents across the municipality who are concerned about on-street parking and access to their properties for visitors, deliveries and tradespeople etc.
Manager Safe and Healthy Environments Caroline Grylls said the area was chosen due to high traffic volumes around the school, visitation to the cathedral and its proximity to central Bendigo.
“It is a very busy area, particularly with people using it as a place to park all day while they go to work in the CBD,” Ms Grylls said.
“It is anticipated that providing a number of time restricted bays will encourage vehicle turnover, creating available spaces for visitors and tradespeople. It should also provide residents with an option to park for short periods to access their property during the day.
“The City welcomes feedback from all residents in the trial area. We are also looking into what other councils are doing, so all options are up for consideration.”
A person with a valid disabled parking permit will be able to park in the time restricted bays for double the time stated on the sign. Tradespeople may also be eligible for exemption from the time restrictions.
The City’s residential parking scheme allows residents with no capacity to provide off-street parking on their property to apply for a permit, which exempts permit holders from time restrictions adjacent to their property.
The trial starts on Monday January 22. All feedback can be provided to parking&[email protected]
