City to host social and affordable housing forum
The City of Greater Bendigo will tomorrow host a forum as part of the development of a Social and Affordable Housing and Living Strategy.
The strategy will investigate how issues around social housing, affordability and homelessness can be addressed at a local level.
The forum will look at these issues and help inform the development of a discussion paper. It will feature Swinburne University’s Professor Terry Burke, a panel discussion and a workshop.
The City’s Manager Regional Sustainable Development Trevor Budge said the strategy would address a growing need in Greater Bendigo.
“We know that affordable housing is in increasing demand in Bendigo and that the supply of affordable housing is linked to homelessness,” Mr Budge said
“Council can play a role in planning for and facilitating the development of this type of housing in areas that are well connected to transport and other services.
“Part of this forum will be hearing from providers and organisations that are providing housing services to determine the extent of that need.
“For Greater Bendigo to remain a liveable and accessible regional city, we need to ensure a variety of housing types, including for people on low incomes.”
A discussion paper is due for release later this year.
