Greater Bendigo City Council has endorsed a new strategic plan for the Bendigo Airport to drive future performance.

The 2017-2022 Bendigo Airport Strategic Plan provides advice on how it can transition from a registered airport with general aviation activities to a commercially viable airport that includes Regular Passenger Transport services.

Mayor Cr Margaret O’Rourke said the updated strategic plan signalled a new direction for the Bendigo Airport.

“Infrastructure of this scale is an incredible asset for a regional city, so it is important Council provides direction on how the airport can reach its full potential and realise its vision of linking passengers and freight in the Loddon Campaspe region to national and international destinations,” Cr O’Rourke said.

“Council strongly supports the expansion of the airport to become a key transport hub for the region and the development of a business park on surrounding land to house aviation-compatible businesses.

“Council looks forward to the airport being a major generator of employment and other economic benefits for the region, and also extending its capacity for emergency and natural disaster responses.”

The objectives of the plan will be achieved through the following strategic directions:

  • Strategic Direction 1 – Connected and active regional transport hub

    • Infrastructure investment at Bendigo Airport will be central to repositioning the asset to a transport hub for passengers and freight

    • Ensure the terminal building is fit for purpose and meets the needs of visitors to the region

  • Strategic Direction 2 – Transformative operations and project delivery

    • Ensure Bendigo Airport meets regulatory compliance standards as it transitions from a registered to a certified airport

    • Ensure the business park development can proceed as planned so as to attract future investment

  • Strategic Direction 3 – Ongoing financial viability

    • Bendigo Airport precinct must operate with a sustainable economic focus and be financially viable in the long term

    • Increase alignment between Bendigo Airport and the business to strengthen freight-related business activity through the airport

  • Strategic Direction 4 – Governance for the future

    • Consider establishing a Board of Management structure so Bendigo Airport is supported in its immediate and ongoing need for commercial and technical development

    • An interim working group is proposed

Cr O’Rourke also thanked the Bendigo Airport Advisory Committee, which was appointed in 2013 and recently finished its term.

“The committee was instrumental in delivering key actions associated with the previous strategic plan, which included developing 25 new hangar sites, advocating for funding support from all three levels of government for the development of the new runway, appointing a dedicated Airport Manager and refurbishment of the terminal building so it is ready for the first stage of Regular Passenger Transport operations,” she said.

“Council appreciated the committee’s commitment to advancing the Airport and hopes it is proud of all it has achieved and the contribution it has made to the liveability of Greater Bendigo and the wider region.”
