Council to release Marong Township Structure Plan for comment

Council will release the final draft of the Marong Township Structure Plan for community comment on Monday June 25.

The plan provides direction for residential and commercial development, public spaces, recreation and community facilities and transport infrastructure needed for a growing population for the next 20 years.

The plan identifies a potential site for a new government primary school and sports fields, outlines areas for future commercial and residential development and identifies a network of public space corridors including off road shared paths to Bendigo and along Bullock Creek.

Since the last draft of the plan, a variety of technical documents relating to transport, stormwater management, heritage and bushfire risk have been prepared.

Regional Sustainable Development Manager Trevor Budge said the plan was the result of extensive research and community consultation.

“Marong’s population is projected to grow to 8,000 people in the next 20 or so years and we need to ensure we have a plan in place to accommodate that growth.

“To help us pay for some of the infrastructure needed, a Development Contributions Plan will be prepared, which requires developers to make financial contributions towards public assets as they develop land.

“The implementation of the DCP and proposed land rezoning will form part of a separate planning scheme amendment and exhibition process once the plan is approved.

“We encourage community members to provide their feedback on the plan in the coming weeks.”

Email and written submissions will be accepted and are due by Monday August 20. The plan will be available at www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/MarongTSP

A number of drop-in sessions will also be held in Marong. Details of these sessions will be advertised online.
