The City of Greater Bendigo is inviting residents to have their say on a redevelopment option for the historic Bendigo Gas Works site in Weeroona Avenue at a community drop in session set to take place from 3.30 to 6pm on Wednesday May 23, 2018 at the Bendigo Tennis Centre pavilion, Nolan Street Bendigo.

The redevelopment option, which has been endorsed by the Greater Bendigo City Council, includes new pedestrian/cycle path links across the creek to Lake Weeroona, an interpretive trail, a new plaza for events, markets and site interpretation, an event space in the heart of the site, new lighting and other services, conservation of heritage buildings, new vehicle access and parking and landscaping.

City of Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Margaret O’Rourke said in addition to endorsing the redevelopment option the City has also supported a decontamination project at the site and agreed to provide $45,000 to develop schematic designs and costs estimates for the future of the site in consultation with the community.

“Late last year we said we would hold a community drop in session  to allow residents to have their say on the project and Councillors and staff from the City’s Heritage and Property areas will be available to chat to residents at the session.  I encourage all interested residents and those who live nearby to drop into the session and have their say,” Cr O’Rourke said.

The Bendigo Gasworks site is an important heritage asset that operated from 1860 to 1973.

All of the gasworks buildings and equipment are largely intact but in very poor condition as the site is frequently subjected to illegal entry and attacks by vandals.

Although closed for many years the site is heavily contaminated from its previous use as a gas works and the Department of Treasury and Finance is currently planning and funding the decontamination of the site.

Cleaning up the site and developing a plan for its future use will help protect this important heritage asset and provide opportunities for the broader community.

An estimate of costs for the redevelopment option cannot be determined until the schematic design work is undertaken by the City.
