Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Margaret O’Rourke will launch two special multilingual children’s books that have been written and illustrated by members of the local Karen and Afghanistani communities.

The Multicultural Children’s Book Project is a partnership between the City of Greater Bendigo, Goldfields Library Corporation and Kids Own Publishing with funding provided by the Victorian Government.

The first book in Karen and English is focused on numbers and counting using illustrations of home life and country scenes from Burma and Thailand.

The second book for Afghanistani children and families is in Hazaragi, Dari and English. This book is about the Legend of Buz-e-Chini, a traditional folk tale as told by the community.

The books are an important way for children and families to learn and share their culture and language and recognise the importance of belonging wherever they may be.

The stories and artwork were chosen and created by the respective communities during workshops facilitated by the City of Greater Bendigo at the Bendigo Library.

The launch is part of the 2018 Write on the Fringe Festival.
