The Greater Bendigo City Council has voted to allocate funds in its 2016/17 budget for more and improved parking at the Big Hill Primary School at this week’s Council meeting.

Mayor Cr Peter Cox said Council will provide $29,000 to extend the existing angle parking on McInnes Street to create an additional 10 parking spaces.

“We will also seek $62,000 in funding from the State Government to formalise parking on Prospector’s Way to create an additional 14 parking spaces at the school.

“The City of Greater Bendigo will work closely with Big Hill Primary School to improve parking signage to encourage improved turnover at the drop off and pick up point.

“In addition there will be improvements made in Phillis Street Kangaroo Flat near the Calder Highway to provide an additional drop off and pick up point for parents and students.

“The City will also assist Big Hill Primary School to establish a program that encourages students to walk or ride their bikes to school as part of Council’s commitment to the Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy and the Active Travel, Healthy Kids Guide,” said Cr Cox.

Council received a petition signed by 115 members of the community regarding safety at school drop off and pick up times earlier this year.

“We have listened to their concerns and look forward to working with the school to implement the works in the next financial year,” he said.
