Speed to be reduced at high accident intersection

The City of Greater Bendigo has received approval from VicRoads to reduce the speed limit from 100km/h to 80km/h in the vicinity of the Axedale - Goornong / Epsom - Barnadown intersection.

The intersection has been the site of several serious car accidents in recent years.

City of Greater Bendigo Engineering Manager Brett Martini said new signage advising of the new 80 km/h speed zone will be installed in May.

“The City is currently preparing detailed concept plans for a staggered T intersection and is continuing discussions with landowners near the intersection,” Mr Martini said.

“We are also preparing a funding submission to the Federal Government’s Black Spot Program to cover the cost of the future safety works.

“A staggered intersection would mean motorists travelling on the Epsom-Barnadown Road would be required to turn onto the Axedale-Goornong Road and then back onto the Epsom-Barnadown Road, rather than travelling straight across the intersection.  A 100 km/h speed limit will be restored after intersection works are undertaken in the future.

“In the meantime motorists are urged to abide by the new speed limit and take care when travelling near this intersection.”
