Greater Bendigo City Council Mayor, Cr Peter Cox, is calling for volunteers to help pack two shipping containers with school furniture, books, uniforms, sporting equipment, knitted baby clothes and women’s jumpers destined for the Maubisse region of East Timor.

Cr Cox, who is also Chair of the Bendigo Maubisse Friendship Committee, said the items would be put to good use by the East Timorese people.

“This is a fantastic initiative, which has seen items donated by the Commonwealth Bank, Strathfieldsaye Primary School, Kennington Primary School, Laurel Street Primary School, La Trobe University, Goldfields Library Corporation and local knitting groups,” he said.

“There has also been support from local Rotary Clubs and their efforts are very much appreciated.”

The first shipping container will be packed on Saturday August 1, 2015 at the former Teacher’s College site in Osborne Street with an 8.30am start.

The second container will be packed on Saturday August 8, 2015 at the Laurel Street Primary School, also with an 8.30am start.

“I am encouraging anyone interested in lending a hand on either of these days to do so,” Cr Cox said.

“East Timor is a very poor country and the items that have been donated are much-needed by people living in the Maubisse region.”
