About Hargreaves Mall

The Mall is a feature of Bendigo’s central shopping precinct and is a great spot for dining and retail therapy. Originally a road, Hargreaves Mall is open only to pedestrians and close to parking and public transport. The Mall hosts events like Bendigo's Moonlight Market and concerts by the Bendigo Blues and Roots Festival.

Hargreaves Mall Micro-Tenancies Expression of Interest

The City of Greater Bendigo is seeking creative street trading ideas to make use of the lantern spaces in Hargreaves Mall. The spaces have been recently refurbished to support a range of businesses.

We want to hear from businesses, artists, students, start-ups or even fitness professionals (and anyone else who has a great idea) interested in using these centrally located spaces to test products or services, run pop up events or bars, and much more. Tenancies will be short term, flexible and at no cost to the successful applicants.

The City will provide significant logistical support. So, if you have a great idea, please complete the application. If you have any questions, would like to see the space, and to submit the EOI, please email [email protected]

About the Hargreaves Mall shade structure

(Above image is an artist's impression only)

The City of Greater Bendigo has released a concept design for the new shade structure to be built in Hargreaves Mall, which will provide year-round weather protection.

The shade structure, which received funding in the 2020/2021 budget, is a priority action of the Transforming the City Centre Plan adopted in 2018 and will respond to ongoing community requests for more shade, colour and softness in Hargreaves Mall.

The structure will feature curved wood and be made from sustainably sourced materials. Panels under the clear, weather-proof roofing layer are laser-cut to provide a dappled effect on the ground and create a softer welcoming space. Rainfall will be captured and channelled into the Mall’s subsurface irrigation system to water trees and landscaping.

The shade structure will allow Hargreaves Mall to be used all year round for a wide range of events such as markets, fun days and live music, which have previously had to be cancelled due to rain or extreme heat.

Construction is due to start in the first half of 2021.

Answers to frequently asked questions about the Hargreaves Mall shade structure.

The City is constructing a large, permanent shade structure in the middle of Hargreaves Mall. This will mean the space can be used more comfortably all year round.

The City has recently installed a brand-new Changing Place in the Hargreaves St multi-storey car park, and in 2018 installed a temporary pop-up park. The temporary pop-up park has been a huge success. The City has also recently finished works to repurpose the old toilet facilities so they can be used for pop-up micro tenancies. An expression of interest process for this is open now.

Work on a new hotel is set to begin very soon, which will bring more people into Hargreaves Mall (the City approved the planning permit for this development). The City supports various events and activities in the city centre which are designed to make it an inviting and interesting place to visit.

The highly successful temporary pop-up park is reaching the end of its two-year lifespan. Work is underway to design more permanent landscaping, seating and a low performance stage to replace the pop-up park. This will deliver year-round colour and softness at ground level and create a welcoming casual seating area and events space for the whole community to enjoy. At this stage, the funding for the shade pavilion project only includes the construction of the actual pavilion.
