Event Types

An event is any organised activity held on public land where an open area, facility, venue, road or temporary structure is to be used by more people than are usually found in that location. Please see definitions of our variety of events below.

Hallmark events

Internationally recognised and unique to the region, hallmark events attract national and international participants and spectators to our destination from outside of the region. Hallmark events have extensive media coverage, usually international or national and generate wide spread economic, social and cultural benefits to the region.

Examples include: Groovin’ the Moo and the Australia vs England Netball Test Match.

Major events

Require a minimum of 500 forecast participants and attract a large percentage of participants from outside the region. Major events have state-wide, national and/or some international profile and significant marketing and media coverage. Major events provide a high level of economic, social and cultural benefits to the region.

Have an agreed sponsorship package with the City of Greater Bendigo.

Require event management, risk assessment and/or traffic management plans.

Examples include: The Bendigo Easter Festival, Herald Sun Tour, Gymnastics National Club Carnival, World Junior Table Tennis Championships.

Business and conferencing events

These events are supported by an external event company, committee or event coordinator, with participants from outside the region. Usually provides economic benefits to the region.

Have an agreed sponsorship package with the City of Greater Bendigo.

Require event management, risk assessment and/or traffic management plans.

Examples include: Rotary conferences, industry expos, car clubs and rallies.

Significant community events

A celebratory event that signifies an aspect of community life.

Require event management, risk assessment and/or traffic management plans.

Examples include: Australia Day and ANZAC Day celebrations, Dahlia & Arts Festival, etc.

Community events

Community events are staged largely for social, fun and entertainment value for the local community. They are targeted primarily at a local audience but may attract from outside the region thereby providing some economic, social and cultural benefits. Marketing and media coverage is mostly local. They may have some wider regional benefits but to a lesser extent than major events.

Require event management, risk assessment and/or traffic management plans.

Please make a community event/gathering enquiry if you are planning to host a community event. 

Examples include: A community fun run or walk, Mother's Day Classic, community awareness days and community celebrations.

Civic and ceremonial events

These are official events for celebratory, ritual or commemorative purposes where our Mayor may be present.

Examples include: Citizenship ceremony, a significant state or national day, individual and community achievements, or the launch of a City major capital works project.

Minor events, gatherings and public space bookings

These are held on or affect council owned or managed land or civic spaces in the CBD. They do not require event management plans or processes and are commonly run by groups for private family days or fundraising opportunities. 

Please make a community event/gathering enquiry if you are planning to host a minor event or gathering on council owned or managed land.

Examples include: Weddings, birthdays, raffles, reunions and lamington-drives.
