Planning Scheme Amendment C271 - 55 Condon Street, Kennington
The City of Greater Bendigo has prepared planning scheme amendment C271gben (the Amendment) to the Greater Bendigo Planning Scheme. The Amendment proposes to apply a Heritage Overlay (HO937) to part of 55 Condon Street, Kennington. Originally, the Heritage Overlay was proposed to be applied to the dwelling known as “La Rocca” residence and the observatory known as the “East Bendigo Observatory” which were both constructed in 1900 and the associated three groups of trees. However, following public exhibition of the Amendment, the associated three groups of trees were re-assessed as having no heritage value and were subsequently removed from the Heritage Overlay. The dwelling and observatory were designed by local architect John Beebe and have been identified as being of heritage significance to the City of Greater Bendigo.
The Amendment was on public exhibition from Thursday 18 November until Monday December 20, 2021, following which, seven submissions were received. On 20 April 2022, Council resolved to request the Minister for Planning to appoint an Independent Panel to consider all submissions received for the Amendment. The Minister for Planning appointed the Independent Panel on 5 May 2022.
A Directions hearing has been scheduled for 19 May 2022 and the Panel hearing during the week starting Monday 20 June 2022. All submitters to the Amendment will be invited to attend the Directions hearing and will be given an opportunity to present at the Panel hearing.
