Golden Square Heritage Study

Leave feedback

We are in the early stages of  the Golden Square Heritage Study, and we need your feedback!

The City of Greater Bendigo is currently undertaking a heritage study in the suburb of Golden Square to identify places that are of heritage significance and should be protected for future generations as the area grows and develops.

The Golden Square Heritage Study will focus on physical and cultural heritage from the post-contact period until 1945. We have not undertaken a heritage study of the Golden Square area since completion of the Eaglehawk and Bendigo Heritage Study (1993) and a review is much needed, as our understanding of heritage significance and planning has changed considerably.

As a first step in this heritage study, we commissioned a comprehensive history of Golden Square.

You may be familiar with many existing heritage places within the Golden Square Heritage Study boundary, the Goldmines Hotel, Fortuna Villa, Miners' Cottages and the Central Deborah Quartz Gold Mines. But heritage can include many different things such as trees, bridges or even industrial sites. Please tell us what heritage means to you and what physical and cultural heritage places of Golden Square you think are important. There are a few ways to submit your feedback, which are detailed below.

Social Pinpoint mapping and survey

We are using the Social Pinpoint mapping system to capture places of potential heritage significance in Golden Square. The interactive mapping allows users to drag and drop a marker onto a site and provide a description of why the place is of heritage significance. The markers for places of heritage significance are divided into the following categories:

  • ‘Places/sites of community connection’
  • ‘Tree, Park or Landscape’
  • ‘Building or Structure’
  • ‘Mining, Industrial or Commercial’
  • Indigenous site/place

If a place has already been marked on the map someone else, you will be able to ‘like’ the site and/or provide additional comments, as well as upload pictures.

We have also created a survey about heritage and places of potential heritage significance in Golden Square. This survey provides the opportunity to provide any additional information or comments in relation to the heritage study.

Access the interactive map and survey.

We have also created reply-paid postcards that we will be distributing to the community. If you would like a postcard mailed to you, please email [email protected] or telephone us on 5434 6355.
