Golden Square Heritage Study
The City of Greater Bendigo is currently assessing heritage places in Stage 2 of the Heritage Study of Golden Square to determine their significance and potentially include them in the Heritage Overlay of the Greater Bendigo Planning Scheme. The City places a strong emphasis on identifying, protecting, maintaining and promoting its cultural heritage to ensure that as Golden Square grows and develops, the special character of the local area is retained, protected and enhanced.
The Golden Square Heritage Study will focus on physical and cultural heritage from the post-contact period until 1945. We have not undertaken a heritage study of the Golden Square area since completion of the Eaglehawk and Bendigo Heritage Study (1993) and a review is much needed, as our understanding of heritage significance and planning has changed considerably.

In stage 1 of this heritage study, we commissioned a comprehensive history of Golden Square to help us understand how it developed and to identify potentially historically significant places.
What is proposed?
Stage 2 of the Golden Square Heritage Study consists of two parts:
- Part 1 - identifies historically significant places not currently in the Heritage Overlay
- Part 2 - reviews places already in the Heritage Overlay, to update the original heritage study that was undertaken in 1993.
Between July and August 2020, the City sought feedback from the Golden Square community about what types of physical and cultural heritage are valued, worthy of recognition or should be celebrated. We received a broad range of responses via interactive mapping, surveys and mailed submissions, and over 70 places were nominated as being of potential heritage value. To provide a summary of the feedback we received in this first round of community consultation, we created this short video:
If you have any questions about the Golden Square Heritage Study or questions about heritage studies or Heritage Overlays in general, please see our Frequently Asked Questions.
Your input and feedback will be used to refine our heritage study, allowing us to recognise, protect and celebrate important heritage places in Golden Square for future generations.
